Losing or maintaining your weight involves both big commitments and little actions. If you’re a person that can make big changes stick easily then quit bragging — you’re that rare person we all envy. Smaller changes are easier for most of us, which is fortunate since it’s hard to carve out an hour a day to hit the gym. But the good news is that the little things can add up in a big, big way.
Here are 20 small changes to add to your routine. Odds are you’ve heard most of these weight loss suggestions before, but we can all use a reminder… Me included.
- Park further away when you drive to the store.
- Stand on one leg while doing dishes or brushing your teeth.
- Skip the pizza crust, just eat the part that is worth it.
- Do squats during commercials. (Yes, some people still see commercials.)
- Do calf raises while you ride up an elevator.
- Drink more water. Drink more water. Drink more water.
- Eat more fiber. Eat more fiber. Eat more fiber.
- Lunge your way from one room to another. Bonus points if you do this at work!
- Get a pedometer or an Apple Watch or a FitBit and set daily step goals.
- Skip those fries and just get the burger.
- Fake kickbox me for suggesting you skip the fries.
- Bring your lunch to work. (This is a big one!)
- Find a buddy. Keep each other accountable.
- Don’t drink your fruit; eat it whole.
- Get most of your calories in at breakfast and lunch.
- Choose wine over cocktails.
- Pick the margarita on the rocks over the frozen.
- Brush your teeth after every meal or when you’re tempted to snack.
- Once an hour go for a 3-5 minute walk… No excuses.
- Keep a resistance band in your office and use it to stretch and open your chest twice a day. (Maybe do this when you get up every hour, because you’re going to be doing that, right?)
Weight loss is a journey, but doing any of these little things sets you on the right path and gives you a little victories that inspire and keep you going. And any victory is a win worth celebrating… Hooray, calf raises for everybody!
